New Testament was divided into verses by Italian Biblical Scholar Santes Pagnins(1471-1541). His transcription didn’t last long as they were divided into many longer versions.

In 1551, Robert Estienne revised the numbering in the new edition Greek New Testament. The verses division in this edition was widely adopted and is almost the same in the modern-day bible used today.

Similarly, the inclusion of verses number integrated into the text was published in 1557 by William Whittingham. The first bible with both chapter and verses were published in 1560.

From that time on, these verses and chapter divisions are accepted and are used in English Bible as well as in various other languages.
